Aeration: Aeration is the process of creating air pores in compacted soils. Aeration is a benefitial process in which columnar shaped 'cores' are removed from your lawn. The cores are left on the surface to be broken up in time & redistributed into the air pockets. The broken up soil clumps will also aid in reducing thatch as soil microbes break it down. The air pockets increase air-gas exchange in the soils which helps root growth and increases drought tolerances. This ultimately leads to a lawn that will allow better water and fertilizer uptake. It will also be less likely to puddle after large rain events. Most lawns only require a yearly aeration service, however lawns that have been severely compacted by construction equipment, trucks, or even large lawn parties may require several aerations during the course of the year to repair the damage done. Aeration services are typically performed in the spring and late August through September. It is a great service to combine with overseeding.
